 Postnatal Recovery

Congratulations on the arrival of your little one! The fourth trimester marks a significant transition as you adjust to life with your new baby. Whether you've had a vaginal birth or a C-section, the journey of childbirth can be physically and emotionally taxing. Once you're back home, caring for your newborn becomes the top priority, often leaving little time for self-care.

The lack of sleep, constant demands of feeding and changing diapers, and the physical strain of caring for a newborn can indeed take a toll on your body. It's common to experience aches and pains as you navigate this adjustment and recovery period.

At Praxis Rehab Physiotherapy, we understand the unique challenges of the fourth trimester and are here to support you through this transitional phase. We recommend every woman see a women’s health physiotherapist for a 6-week postnatal check.

  • Management of Mastitis/ blocked milk ducts: Mastitis, a painful inflammation of the breast tissue, is a common concern for breastfeeding mothers during the postpartum period. Our postnatal care includes support and guidance for managing mastitis effectively. We offer techniques to help alleviate pain and reduce inflammation, along with advice on proper breastfeeding positioning and techniques to prevent recurrence.

  • Pelvic Floor Assessment: We conduct a comprehensive assessment of your pelvic floor muscles to identify any postpartum dysfunctions, such as weakness, tightness, or perineal muscle trauma. This assessment guides our treatment approach and helps us track your progress over time.

  • Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation: We offer specialized pelvic floor rehabilitation programs tailored to your specific needs and concerns. These programs may include exercises to strengthen weak muscles, release tension in tight muscles, improve coordination, and enhance pelvic floor awareness.

  • Scar Management: For individuals who have undergone perineal tears or episiotomies during childbirth, we provide scar management techniques to promote healing and reduce discomfort. This may involve manual therapy, scar massage, and gentle stretching exercises to improve tissue mobility and flexibility.

  • Bladder and Bowel Dysfunction Management: We address common postpartum issues such as urinary incontinence and faecal incontinence through a combination of pelvic floor exercises, behavioural strategies, and lifestyle modifications. Our goal is to restore continence and improve your quality of life.

  • Return to Sports/Running Assessment: We provide comprehensive assessments and offer tailored programs to guide your return to sport or running safely after childbirth.
